The legendary Cloisonné craftsmanship: The perfect combination of porcelain and copper.
Jingtai Blue, also known as cloisonné, is a unique craft combining porcelain and copper. Its production process includes using purple copper to make the body, then using flat and thin copper wires to stick patterns on the body, and finally filling the patterns with enamel glazes of different colors. After this process is completed, it also needs to go through repeated sintering, polishing, and gilding steps.
The production process of Jingtai Blue incorporates both bronze and porcelain craftsmanship, as well as traditional painting and carving techniques. Therefore, it is regarded as the epitome of traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
According to legend, in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, after a fire broke out in the palace, the gems and gold and silver inside the Golden Luang Hall were burned to ashes. However, a colorful and sparkling treasure bottle was discovered among the ruins. After the Emperor obtained this treasure bottle, he ordered all skilled craftsmen in the capital to replicate it, or else they would be executed. Faced with this imperial decree, the craftsmen were puzzled and could not comprehend the origin of this craftsmanship.
Finally, they sought the help of the top craftsman in the capital city - Li Qiaoshou. It is said that Li Qiaoshou is a descendant of Nüwa, and she is called Li Qiaoshou because she is skilled in making exquisite crafts. Shortly after, Li Qiaoshou received a dream from Nüwa, in which she told him the key steps to make the treasure bottle. He realized that in the fire at the Jinluan Palace, the gemstones and gold and silver melted together to form this bottle.
What Nüwa said, 'Without the white orchid blossoming, without the Eight Diagrams butterfly coming, without enduring the hardships of water and stone grinding, how can the spring stay forever,' is exactly the five key steps in making Cloisonné: wire cutting, blue-dotting, blue firing, polishing, and gilding.
After the founding of New China, Cloisonné went through the changes of the times and received vigorous development. Now, Cloisonné has been divided into two major categories: Cloisonné and Filigree Cloisonné, including gold ground Cloisonné, blue ground Cloisonné, gold wire Filigree, silver wire Filigree, blue ground Filigree, gold wire foaming, and silver wire foaming, and many other different varieties. Cloisonné has become an indispensable decoration in home life and an enduring art craft.
The value and inheritance of objects completely rely on people's orientation. For 600 years, the luxury of cloisonné has never been worn away by time, but it is also deeply influenced by the changes of people's hearts. We have reason to believe that if we do not appreciate cloisonné craftsmanship with thinking and precipitation, it will become a devastation to it. Therefore, we should cherish this national treasure of cloisonné and prevent it from disappearing in new China.
